A talking dog, an endangered chocolate eating bird, and a young zealous wilderness explorer remind an elderly widower that love can be found in the strength and wonder of friendships after losing his lifetime companion and wife.
'Up' is an imaginative and heart warming display of love in its many forms: enduring love that surpasses lifetimes, the love of friends, and the love of life and pursuit of dreams. The elderly main character, Mr. Carl Fredericksen, as a child was passionate about adventure and exploration, and particularly admired explorer, Charles Mutz, who had settled in South America. His childhood friend and future wife, Ellie, shared his excitement in adventure and in following the career of Mr. Mutz. She even insisted that her young pal, Carl, "cross his heart" that he would one day help her float her house to sit right next to Paradise Falls in South America, a land lost in time.
After losing Ellie to old age and being forced to leave his home and join a 'Home for the Elderly,' he is compelled to finally keep his promise to his wife and move their house to Paradise Falls. With the assistance of Russell, the ever so eager Wilderness Explorer, attempting to retrieve his 'assist the elderly' badge, they float the house all the way to Paradise Falls suspended by helium balloons! It is during this quest that they encounter some unique and endearing friends, including the talking dog, Doug, that open Mr. Fredericksen up to life once again.
Ultimately, 'Up' shows us that adventures do not have to require helmets and bungee cords. Daily life in all of its commonness is an absolute adventure when shared with someone you love.
